What research says

Both bikes are very much the same so it really depends on what the customer wants. The specialized has twist shifters which i personally don't like because they tend to get twisted on accident if your hand gets to close to the middle of the handle bars. Also, when shifting during a moment when you want a grip on the handle bars can be very tedious. Both have the same shock, but for some reason the specialized has more travel, although not by much. The specialized is cheaper and offers more of a size range.

For the price, these can't be beat. But don't expect a $300 mountain bike to last long when you're going fast down some rocky-rooty trails. If you just want something to ride around town, and maybe take on some dirt trails, either the Gary Fischer or the Specialized mountain bikes in this range will do. But if you're serious about getting into mountain biking and have a couple of grand to spend, get the Fisher Fat Possum XT or have a bike custom-made for you.
