What research says Blockbuster Video is a well known name, and now so is Netflix. As we compare online DVD rental services from the pair there are some clear benefits and some hard choices to make.
Blockbuster was late to the "movies by mail" party but has one huge benefit; Blockbuster has physical store locations. If you don't want to wait for the mailman you can go to a local Blockbuster and exchange your TotalAccess DVD, however you MUST have a membership at a Blockbuster store. Online you'll find that Blockbuster's website is colorful and has an online movie tracker to help you keep up with what you've rented. Netflix has a wonderfully clean website and it was easy to surf and much less distracting than Blockbuster. Neflix also has more titles, and cost less to join at the lowest level. Both services give pleny of info on the movies that they rent and offer stong search abilities. In comparing these two I remember that movie rental was the goal, and Netflix has more movies. In the end we selected Netflix as the editor's choice because when we went to Blockbuster to sign up, the contract included signing up for a bunch of other stuff (known in the marketing world as co-reg. or co-registration) which we thought was sort of underhanded.
Pam said:I have been using Blockbuster's mail program for over a month, after having analyzed theirs and Netflix options. I LOVE the Blockbuster program. The movies arrive ontime or earlier than they predict. I can get more movies faster if I turn in my completed movies at the store. The network does not have to wait for snail mail to arrive before they send the next titles. The local store's computer automatically checks them in on the spot, and the next day, the national branch indicates that they have sent my next titles. I turn in a couple on Friday; on Saturday I receive notification that my next titles have been shipped; on Tuesday or Wednesday I receive them. In the meantime, for every movie I turn in to the store, I can get another "free" movie to watch before my next mailing arrives. It's virtually a movie a day, and it boils down to Blockbuster's prices being HALF that of Netflix, if you use it that way. Double the movies since the return time is immediate. Plus, you get a monthly coupon to rent an extra on! It can't be beat. I love the personalized organizer online...I currently have over 50 titles of future rentals. If I rent one of those in the local store, I can go online and delete it from my quee, re-rank the titles as often as I like. VIC said:I am using Blockbuster and was happy, but now they are pulling that one day rental and trying to get customer with the late fees. KF said:I have used Blockbuster online for a couple of years. I find that the return to store option is a major benefit for those of us with immediate gratification needs (mostly the kids). Love it.
