What research says

This series of stick vacuums are compact for easy storage, lightweight for ease of use, and multi-purpose for lots of use. To begin - two of these units are corded, which gives them a powerful advantage over most cordless versions of a stick vacuum. However, the Dirt Devil is a strongly powered exception. Another variant in our comparison is the Bissell 3106A which pulls the neat trick of converting from a floor vac to a handheld.

While each of these units have some unique features, the most important feature is the ability to clean. In usage owners loved the suction and power of the Hoover S2220, its long cord, and slim design. Noise became a bit of an issue with the high powered Dirt Devil M083414 cordless, however the cordless ability really, really speeds up the vacuum time, and adds a safety factor on steps with no cord to trip over. These units are all bagless, with dirt containers than be quickly emptied.

In consideration, all of these units are great for frequent use, have a wide variety of uses. The Hoover S2220 worked well on carpet, while the Dirt Devil M083414 was a whiz on hard surfaces and its cordless ability zips through work. For those with carpeted steps or odd surfaces the Bissell 3106 with its handheld mode are very useful.

The best stick vacuum cleaners are the ones that don't break. I've owned to of the vacuums in this review and one of the broke; the other didn't. Don't buy the Bissell.
