What research says

Ryobi's Tek4 brand is beginning to demonstrate how reliable and useful the line of products has become. This unit provides an all around durable and reliable measurement with accuracy of laser technology. It comes with a charger, holster and battery and can withstand light impact, dust and water. Overall this unit appears to give other brands a good run for their money.

Hilti products, more than most, are known for their ruggedness and ability to withstand multiple years of abuse on the jobsite. This unit is much simpler to operate than the others we reviewed but it doesn't boast the lithium ion battery pack found in the review of other products. While the durability of the unit is a nice feature you'll have to ask yourself if the cost weighs in on having to buy batteries or rely on another rechargeable resource.

The FatMax, while economical, doesn't appear to provide the a happy medium between durability, accuracy and flexibility. It's a great model for a do-it-yourself kind of person who wouldn't be using the unit on a day to day basis – especially for the cost. While the manufacturer says the unit is impact resistant we're hard pressed to believe that it can live up to the rigors of day to day activity - but it certainly is a good model for the money.
