What research says In this comparison we look at 3 great machines from Gaggia, Saeco, and Briel. All of these espresso machines come in at an extremely reasonable price point of $249.00 and may be found for less. These machines all feature the most important part of any espresso machine; high pressure.
There is a matter of build quality at this price point, and two machines here stand out for different reasons. First the Saeco Nina, which uses ABS plastic which has high mechanical and impact strength, makes for a rugged machine that will withstand years of usage and is easy to clean. The Gaggia Carezza also features ABS plastic construction but goes a step further by not only using stainless steel accents but having key peices of the machine made entirely from stainless steel such as the drop-trap basin, filter basket, and cup-support grate. The final push is the Briel Cadiz Espresso Machine, which is listed as black but that best describes it's accents. This machine has lots of stainless steel and the look of barista quality with a simple to use, straight-forward design. As for features, Briel has upped the ante to compete with the big names of Saeco and Gaggia. Briel is no newcomer to the espresso game, but they do have a smaller market share. To be more competitive Briel has given the pump in its machine a 10-year warranty, used a stunning design, a built-in tamper, and added features like a water filter and a no-drip system. Gaggia has its super features as well the most important is the fact that it sports the highest pressure of any of these machines at 17.5 bars but regulates that pressure to an even 9 bars, so that every cup is the same, just like professional espresso machines. Add to that, the professional grade 3-way solenoid valve and commerical portafilter. Both the Briel Cadiz espresso machine, and the Gaggia Carezza have a turbo frother. The Saeco Nina brings a middle-ground to all of this with its modern design and features. The Saeco is extremely easy to use, clean and love. These units can all utilize coffee grounds or pods, and none of them at this price point have built-in grinders. This is important only because espresso made with freshly ground beans can have a much richer flavor, aroma and body. A good investment would be a grinder if you're serious about your espressos and your lattes. In summary let the asthetic play a role but consider the contents of this espresso machine review and make an informed decision based on price, features and reliability.
Everett said:You know what annoys me more than anything about these home use espresso machines? The fact that they don't come with the steaming pot and no regular sized coffee cups will fit under the handle. So you end up using one cup for the milk, another small cup or shot glass for the espresso, and then yet another regular coffee cup to mix them both together in! Other Resources and Reviews |
