What research says

The Yoga Essentials sticky yoga mat scored the worst on the "green factor" because it was produced using toxic chemicals called phthalates, which are often used to soften hard plastics. However, this mat scored the best in terms of price and durability.

The Envirofit Jute yoga mat scored the worst on durability, and online reviews say that it can fall apart after only a dozen or so uses. However, this mat scored the best in terms of the "green factor" because jute is an eco-friendly, sustainable material.

The Natural Rubber sticky yoga mat did not score the best on anything. However, it was the most consistent all-around performer and is a great value for the money. The rubber yoga mat does contain latex, however, so it is not a good option for those who are allergic to this material.

The Premium Benefit yoga mat did not score the worst on anything, and was twice as thick as all of the other mats. Additionally, it scored the best on health issues - and you can't put a price on the use of latex-free, phthalate-free materials, especially if you are allergic to latex. I have one of these mats at home and it is durable, comfortable, and best of all doesn't smell like a chemical factory when I leave it in the trunk on a hot day. For these reasons it won the editor's pick.

Why does Gaiam even sell the cheap sticky yoga mats shown in the first one? Aren't they supposed to be an environmentally-friendly company?

I love their products, but every once in awhile I get the feeling the buyers are out of touch with the values of their shoppers. Not often, but still...

Gaiam has some more yoga mats that just came out in their new catalog this month. You should check them out, as there are a few that are eco-friendly and affordable. Some cool new materials are on the market.

I've tried a number of eco-friendly mats, trying to find one I like as well as the old PVC mats. No one that I have read has mentioned the smell of the rubber mats. The rubber smell has not gone away in the past year and my hands especially smell after practice.
