What research says In this review we chose to compare the versions of these natural toothpastes with fluoride. The Natural Dentist and Tom's of Maine brands also come with fluoride-free options. Because Biotene only comes in Fresh Mint we decided to compare apples-to-apples (mint-to-mint actually) and get the same flavors for the other two: Spearmint.
Biotene toothpaste is probably the best when it comes to bleeding, sensitive gums. Many of those strange-sounding ingredients found on the package are actually just enzymes (Lactoperoxidase, Glucose Oxidase, etc.) that sound a lot scarier than they really are. This brand is great for people with conditions like Lichen Planus, Sjogren's Syndrome and frequently dry gums / mouth. There is no foam, which takes some getting used to, but that is mostly because Biotene toothpaste doesn't use Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which is actually a good thing (see Tom's of Maine below). Some people also claim the enzymes in Biotene help them reduce the occurrence of canker sores. On the down-side, this natural toothpaste is expensive and doesn't taste as good as the other two in this comparison. The Natural Dentist is the best brand for those who want a natural toothpaste that is effective, tastes good and is affordable. Tom's of Maine is about the same price and tastes just as good, but we like The Natural Dentist's list of ingredients much better. As I brushed with it I could feel the silica gently scraping off the thin layer of plaque that had developed overnight. Despite not using Sodium Lauryl Sulfate this brand still manages to foam, although not as much as normal toothpaste (which tends to foam so much it gets messy). As I rinsed I noticed my gums didn't feel as sore as they sometimes do when brushing with normal toothpaste, and perhaps that has something to do with the soothing effect of the Aloe Vera. Tom's of Maine tastes good, is affordable and is widely available. But I just can't get over the fact that they use this ingredient. SLS isn't the worst ingredient out there when it comes to toothpaste, but for a brand to identify itself as "healthy" or "natural" I just don't understand why they would sacrifice their reputation by using such a controversial substance.
