What research says

First of all understand that it's not the brand that is good or bad sometimes - it's the snowboard. When we say one brand is great for mountain and poor in the park, that is an aggregate of their boards and reputation. They may have one or two park boards that perform great. This snowboard comparison is meant to provide some guidance to people who are new to the sport. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, and the best way to find out which board is right for you is to RIDE IT! Check the mountains and find out when they are having snowboarding demos. That way you can use different boards for free and find out which you like best. As for me - I ride a Never Summer Legacy and it does great on every kind of terrain I've come across.

We may have left off a few of your favorite snowboard brands, but there were just too many to review and compare all at once. The snowboard makers we did choose to review are considered by many to be the creme of the cop, although we're sure there are others out there that deserve a shot at the title. If you know of one, please comment below.

Burton
Burton is one of those huge corporate companies that remains true to the philosophy and outlook of their industry. As their slogan goes, "Burton Snowboards is a rider driven company..." It goes on to say they create the best snowboarding equipment on the planet. True? We'll see...

K2
Unlike Burton, K2 is into a lot of extreme sports. They started out as a ski company in Washington, but now sell snowboards, skis, roller blades, mountain bikes, snowshoes... They also own tons of other snowboard brands like Ride, and Little Bear. We will review Ride on it's own merit. For those snowboard brand comparison we'll stick to K2 Snowboards as their own brand.

Never Summer
Compared to Burton and K2, Never Summer Snowboards is just some guy's backyard hobby. But in terms of quality and durability, they are known worldwide to be one of the best snowboard companies on the planet. That is why we have included them. Well that, and the fact that I own a Legacy and a Titan - both big a$$ Never Summer Snowboards. Let's see how they stack up against the Big Boys.

Rome
The Rome Snowboard Design Syndicate is a brand built on the ideal of putting snowboarders in control of snowboarding by listening to other 100-day riders and creating innovative products that increase the thing that matters most: fun.

Ride
Another Washington snowboard company, Ride rode to town in 1992 on four snowboard models that saw them through the first few years. You know a brand is good when you can Google "Brandname Sucks" and not see a single bad review on the first page. That's what happened when we tried to find people who didn't like Ride Snowboards. Try searching for 'Burton sucks' and you'll see a totally different story...

Forum
Did you see that That video? Did you get the feeling there were some underlying gay moments in there? Freudian snowboarding DVDs aside, Forum is a great company with some sick riders and jibbing boards for around $200 new.

Nidecker
Nidecker Snowboards has been around for a bloody long time. This Swiss company sold their first board in 1984 (first skis were made back in 1912!), and they continue to be on the cutting edge with designs like the NANO board. Great boards; creative designers; pain in the a$$ website.

Gnu
Gnu Snowboards have perfected magne-traction and those boards are great in icy conditions. Danny Kass rides for Gnu Snowboards, as do a few other well-known, talented snowboarders. In terms of overall quality, however, can they compete?

Honorable Mentions:
Salomon, Rossignol, Palmer, Nitro, Option, Nidecker, and Flow

Are 5150 boards any good? I am entry level and do not want to make a huge investment for this 5 time per year hobby... please advise
David

Steezy Geezy said:

David - 5150 are good snowboards for a beginner if you plan on riding mostly the park (eg groomed runs) and rails (although you won't be doing that as a beginner). Personally I'd go with an all-mountain board. K2 and Burton (see above reviews) both have inexpensive all mountain boards. Never Summer is fantastic, but they're way too pricey for a beginner.

Dan said:

I have to agree with the Never Summer as the editors pick, I've ridden many brands andmany are good but Never Summer has incredible stuff. I currently ride the Titan

Leon said:

Arbor deserves an honorable mention. As does the canadian company Prior, although Prior is small like Never Summer and does cost a lot of money, they do make a great product and they will custom make their boards to tailor your needs.

never summer is totally wicked. I personally ride the SL-R and it's the best board i've ever had!

Trying so hard to buy the perfect snowboard for my 15yr old boy. I have no idea what I am doing. your site has actually helped me out a little (more then the others) What do I buy to get him started. Unfortunatly, we can't just try different ones so, we have the pressure to pick the perfect board & bindings and what else is needed. I really hope this gets to someone that can send us in the right directs. My son Jimmy, has taken snowboard lesson & has made it down the mountian using their rentals. I want him to be comfortable and Confidence. That way he will have the best time. My name is Joanne Walsh (email) jjwal@verizon.net If anyone has some advice plase let us know. Thank You ...

I rode a burton feelgood (v rocker) and really liked it. I'm wondering if there are other v rocker boards available that have the flex and lighterweight like the burton feelgood does that i should check out before i buy.

I have been riding Burton boards for over 13 years, but I have unfortunately seen a big decline in the quality of goods they produce over that time frame. It looks like Burton is less interested in quality and customer service these days and more driven by the profit margins they can create by making most of their gear in China. I have found that making a warranty claim with Burton is pretty much useless, and even if they will support a defective product, you will pay for it to be shipped at least one way. The 48hr warranty repair service they advertize is only true if you pay to ship the item overnight to them. I'm going to try a Never Summer this weekend, and from what I've heard, I might never go back.

yey is really think that Burton is the BEST brand
exelent for riding and perect for begginers.

I just received a catalogue for Matrix Snowboards. Any comments or reviews? I own a small rental shop in Lake Tahoe, new, and looking for inexpensive quality.

I've been riding a Never Summer Premier for about 6 years. Great board but sometimes I wish I had something a little lighter. Are some of the newer NS models any lighter? If not, what do you recommend?

Denise said:

Two daughters have outgrown their boards. I am wondering what your opinion is of the 07 Sapient Solstice Snowboard? Thanks.

I've ridden Burton for the last 7 seasons, actually broke my last one in 2 thinking of getting a Rome? Anyone know about the new Burton Sherlock deck? Which Rome is a good all mountain board?

SPUD said:

Living in Colorado over the years i've had few different brands. OPTION, Nitro, Forum, k2 And currently I'm riding a Never Summer SL-R. All were good except the k2(came apart) Forum was the second best on ride but it did start to come apart. The nitro i still use for a jib board still running strong and option was alright in all aspects. Now for my current board(SL-R) its above and beyond all others nothing it cant do, love the rocker/camber, and cant beat the lightweight factor either. My two cents also i like to support a local company.

anyone know how Arbor snowboards would stack up in this list?

Kevin said:

Why is capita not listed on here at all??? The are one of the best boards you can buy.

john said:

Im Thinking of buying either the GNU Park Pickle or the Never Summer Evo? which one would u recommend??

Brandon said:

I've been boarding for two years and I'm looking to upgrade to a new board. I really would like a nice one but inexpensive too. And I only ride mountains. Parks just don't agree with me haha. Any suggestions?

Blake said:

This is a great comparison, page, really solid idea.
Have you considered expanding it? Add brands like Capita, Arbor, Santa Cruz, maybe Libtech and LTD as well.

Mike said:

I am considering upgrading my board. I started snowboarding about 6 years ago and I am still riding a hand me down. I like longer wide boards for powder and speed also casue I wear a size 14. I am currently looking at several boards Never Summer Rapotor X, Ride Manic, Burtion Custom Flying V & Duece and Salomon Special 2 Magnum & Ace Magnum. Anyone have some opinions or info to help me pick?

great website answered most of the questions i have

scott said:

never summer is a great board to ride very high quality. it may cost a little bit more but it will last you many seasons.

Paul said:

good review, but is there a reason why libtech is not mentioned? it should be up there with the best, ive been snowboarding for the last 15 years and ive sold snowboards for 5, libtech is definetly one of the best board makers out there.

Lori said:

How good are Flow snowboards? (the board not the bindings and such). I am thinking about the Myriad.

Justin said:

Get never summer even though more expensive you are paying for a board that will last forever with great performance and great designs.

The new era of Snowboard is the product line of Burton. One of their snowboards is the 2012 Burton Method, which has been setting the stage for creativity and performance. Cool graphic on overall. It does have the Methlon baseline technology. And it does have the UltraMeth construction.

Burton Method UltraMeth construction has the same effective edge as a normal board, but the nose is slightly longer than the tail. It does have a directional shape as well, making it the most versatile snowboard shape.

It has a streamlined slimrail sidewall, meaning that shaves weight without sacrificing edge-hold or strength. It has an Ultrafly core that makes for the most functional, lightweight and durable out there. It has S2 MethodSkin fiberglass and highly durable base. For all you snowboarders out there, you’re going to love this feature. 2012 Burton Method is available for free, simply go to this link ->> https://snow.puurl.com/sweepstakes/snow/method/?sweepname=method
Check out the available wide options at Win Snowboards.
